An opportunity to do your bit for cleaner oceans

The Ocean Cleanup aims to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) and has pioneered the development of technology to collect plastic accumulated in oceanic gyres. The system has already proven successful, and more than 500,000 kg of GPGP waste has been removed since its inception.

In 2025, The Ocean Cleanup will implement a programme to lower costs and shorten the time required for the total cleanup. This programme revolves around "hotspot hunting”: finding those areas within the GPGP with the highest density of plastic waste. Plastic hotspots can be targeted more effectively by improving the software models that predict their locations and in turn determine where the cleanup systems operate. In combination with modeled data, improved models will use live data of the GPGP – from drones, modeling, drifters, and satellite imaging – to predict the locations of high accumulations of plastic more accurately.
