When I was in fourth grade, I first heard that by 2050, there would be more plastic in the ocean than fish (by weight). I was shocked. When I was in sixth grade, I heard that humans consume the equivalent of a credit card's worth of plastic every week. I couldn’t believe it at first. When I recently heard that in the next 10 years approximately 1 million marine animals will die as a result of plastic pollution, it didn’t even suprise me anymore.

Marine plastic pollution has reached devestating proportions and is ever increasing. Globally coordinated political actions must be taken to adress this problem and there are positive steps in this direction, yet immediate action must be taken to combat this issue. For this reason, I set up this fundraiser to support The Ocean Cleanup which aims to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040 through conducting research, developing and implementing new solutions. Additionally, it works to prevent plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place. As a first step, I aim to raise 250 € until the 8th of June, which is World Oceans Day.
